Anyone interested in living with us at the abbey should have a Christian attitude to life as well as human maturity and enjoy living in a close community. They should be at least 18 years old and have a school leaving or apprenticeship certificate. Anyone over 60 years of age can no longer join our monastic community.

Second step CANDIDACY AND NOVITIATE

During several probationary years, both the prospective candidate and the monastic community can check whether they are a good match. The first probationary year is the candidacy (postulancy).

This is followed by the novitiate, which also lasts one year. The novice is already considered a monk of the monastery. He is taught about Cistercian spirituality, liturgy and the history of the order, among other things. He takes on some tasks and work. The novice is given a new name at the investiture ceremony as a sign of a new beginning in his life. He wears the habit as a sign of his consecration to God.

Third step TEMPORARY PROFESSION

After a year in the novitiate, this is usually followed by temporary profession. At this stage, the novice takes vows for three years. He promises constancy (stabilitas), a monastic way of life (conversatio morum) and obedience (oboedientia).

Monks with temporary profession usually devote themselves to further education, especially in the fields of theology and languages. As far as their studies allow, they also carry out various tasks in the monastery.

Fourth step SOLEMN PROFESSION

Solemn profession takes place at the earliest three years after temporary profession. The monk confirms the vows for his entire life. This makes him a full member of the monastic community.
